Rooftop solar

The classic. Afternoons are your rush hour.

Setup

No electrician. If you can clip a cable and open an app, you can do this.

  1. Step 1

Find the data port on your inverter. On most units it is a small Ethernet or RS-485 socket under a rubber cap.

  2. Step 2

Clip the gateway on with the cable in the box. It draws power from the inverter, so there is nothing else to plug in.

  3. Step 3

Open the app, scan the code on the gateway, and confirm the readings match your inverter display.

  4. Step 4

Set a floor. A cent or two above what your utility pays is a good start.

Solar is the simplest thing to sell from because it is already exporting. The only difference is who pays for it.

What you are selling

Every block, the gateway works out how much your roof will make minus what the house will use. That surplus is listed. If clouds roll in, the listing shrinks; if you turn the oven on, it shrinks. You never sell power you needed.

When it earns

Output peaks around midday, but demand peaks in the late afternoon. The best-paying blocks for solar-only roofs are from one to six, when output is still high and the grid is getting busy. A south- or west-facing roof does especially well.

Pairing with a battery

Adding storage roughly doubles what a roof earns, because it lets you sell the same power in the evening instead of at noon. See the home battery guide.
